These are exciting times for Columbia Springs Educational Environmental Center, formerly known
as Evergreen Fisheries Park. Local city, county and state government agencies have joined forces
to preserve and enhance this magnificent 82-acre site located on the gently terraced north shore
of the Columbia River - an area rich in cultural heritage and urban wildlife. Our mission
is to engage the community in environmental education within a historically significant urban
setting.
Columbia Springs will remain a working fish hatchery - and enhance its fish rearing
capabilities - while offering a wide range of environmental and cultural interpretive
opportunities. Education will extend beyond the classroom with youth programs, post-secondary
studies, research opportunities, and self-guided interpretive materials.
Proposed facilities include a new building devoted to community education, an
interpretive stream, labs, a historical center and fish hatchery upgrades. An interpretive
room in the center of the hatchery building has already been completed with the help of grants from SWIFT.
A Working Partnership
Clark Public Utilities and the State of Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife laid
the groundwork for the Center with a cooperative agreement in 1997. Additional members
have joined our partnership as planning and improvements have advanced. Current members
include:
Clark Public Utilities
Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
Clark College
Evergreen School District
City of Vancouver / Clark County
Core Area Master Plan - 2000
The goals of our partnership are to preserve and enhance the site for
fisheries, historical purposes, recreation and education. The natural habitat
will be rigorously maintained.
Members of our partnership will guide the development of Columbia Springs.
The main objectives as outlined in the Master Plan are to:
- Preserve habitat, water and wildlife
- Enhance and expand fish rearing capabilities
- Promote environmental education
- Support compatible recreational and park use
- Develop and maintain historic and cultural use
